A Homeowner's First 5 Steps After Water Damage

When you find water damage in your Silverton, OR home, your first instincts are crucial. Here are the first five steps our IICRC certified experts at AZ Remediation recommend you take while waiting for our team to arrive.

  • Step 1: Ensure Safety Above All Else. If the water damage is severe, or if water is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off the electricity to the affected area at your breaker box. Never enter a room with standing water if the power is still on. Be aware of slip-and-fall hazards and if the water is from a sewage backup, do not touch it with bare skin.
  • Step 2: Stop the Water Source (If Possible). If the damage is from a plumbing issue, find and shut off the main water valve to your home. This is often located in a basement, crawl space, or utility closet. Stopping the flow is the most important step to prevent more damage.
  • Step 3: Call Your Insurance Company. Notify your insurance agent or carrier as soon as possible to report the damage. They will start a claim for you and explain your coverage. Promptly reporting the incident is a key part of the claims process.
  • Step 4: Move and Protect Your Belongings. If it is safe to do so, move wet furniture, rugs, and other belongings to a dry, unaffected area of your Silverton, OR home. Place aluminum foil or plastic blocks under the legs of any furniture that cannot be moved to prevent staining and rust marks.
  • Step 5: Begin Initial Water Removal. For small amounts of clean water, you can start removing excess water by mopping or blotting with towels to reduce absorption into flooring and drywall. Do not use a household vacuum cleaner to remove water, as this can cause electrical shock and damage the vacuum.By taking these initial steps, you can help mitigate the damage. The next and most important step is to call the professionals at AZ Remediation. Our Silverton, OR team will arrive with the advanced equipment needed for complete water extraction, drying, and restoration.

Silverton, OR Insights: Population,
Zip Codes, Influence, and Service Areas

Silverton is a city in Marion County, Oregon, United States. The city is situated along the 45th parallel about 12 miles (19 km) northeast of Salem, in the eastern margins of the broad alluvial plain of the Willamette Valley. The city is named after Silver Creek, which flows through the town from Silver Falls into the Pudding River, and thence into the Willamette River. The community of Milford was founded in 1846 with a sawmill, store and several other buildings two miles upstream from the present location of Silverton. In about 1853 a second sawmill was built on Silver Creek near where the Silverton city hall now stands. In 1854 the town of Silverton was platted and registered with Marion County. Human habitation of the Silverton area extends back approximately 6,000 years before the present. In historical times, the region was dominated by the Kalapuya and Molala peoples, whose seasonal burns of the area made it plow-ready and attractive to early 19th century Euro-American settlers. Farming was Silverton's first major industry, and has been a dominant land-use activity in and around Silverton since the mid-19th century.
