A Homeowner's First 5 Steps After Water Damage

When you find water damage in your Cornwall, PA home, your first instincts are crucial. Here are the first five steps our IICRC certified experts at AZ Remediation recommend you take while waiting for our team to arrive.

  • Step 1: Ensure Safety Above All Else. If the water damage is severe, or if water is near electrical outlets or appliances, turn off the electricity to the affected area at your breaker box. Never enter a room with standing water if the power is still on. Be aware of slip-and-fall hazards and if the water is from a sewage backup, do not touch it with bare skin.
  • Step 2: Stop the Water Source (If Possible). If the damage is from a plumbing issue, find and shut off the main water valve to your home. This is often located in a basement, crawl space, or utility closet. Stopping the flow is the most important step to prevent more damage.
  • Step 3: Call Your Insurance Company. Notify your insurance agent or carrier as soon as possible to report the damage. They will start a claim for you and explain your coverage. Promptly reporting the incident is a key part of the claims process.
  • Step 4: Move and Protect Your Belongings. If it is safe to do so, move wet furniture, rugs, and other belongings to a dry, unaffected area of your Cornwall, PA home. Place aluminum foil or plastic blocks under the legs of any furniture that cannot be moved to prevent staining and rust marks.
  • Step 5: Begin Initial Water Removal. For small amounts of clean water, you can start removing excess water by mopping or blotting with towels to reduce absorption into flooring and drywall. Do not use a household vacuum cleaner to remove water, as this can cause electrical shock and damage the vacuum.By taking these initial steps, you can help mitigate the damage. The next and most important step is to call the professionals at AZ Remediation. Our Cornwall, PA team will arrive with the advanced equipment needed for complete water extraction, drying, and restoration.

Cornwall, PA Insights: Population,
Zip Codes, Influence, and Service Areas

Cornwall was initially settled by Peter Grubb in 1734. Peter was a Chester County stonemason who came to, what was then Lancaster County, in search of high quality stone for quarrying. First building his house and then a store, he discovered magnetite iron ore nearby and decided to test its quality, he found the ore to be exceedingly pure. Grubb wrote to Philadelphia and in 1734 was granted a warrant to purchase 300 acres (1.2 km2) of land. For three years Peter followed veins of ore until he found a large deposit that was easily accessible; however, this ore was not within the bounds of his property. So in 1737 he purchased an additional 142.5 acres (0.577 km2) of land. In 1742 Peter built a cold blast furnace and named it Cornwall, after his father's birthplace in England. The Cornwall Iron Mine was, at one time, the largest open-pit mining operation in the world. They were mined continuously until June 30, 1973, totaling 236 years of production.
